DUCK BOX TIME

Posted by  /

Hey Duck hunters, its time to install or clean out those wood duck boxes. We here at Valentine land and timber LLC just checked the 68 boxes on our own Whites Mill pond Property.we found about 65% sucess on the boxes. Remember to take out the old nest and add 4 to 6 inch of  new pine shavings. Do not use straw, hay, or cedar shavings. As always,a big Shout out goes to the Ducks Unlimited Chapter of Winston Salem, Thank You Jim Shout and Brian Mattison. The box installation has some speicalized propuse. We need more good, nesting sites for Wood ducks, and what a better way to increase the population on your propertys. Here is some pictures of the install, that may help you get some ideas for you to use getting these boxes up in right places. The things to do first installing wood duck boxes on a body of water is look for places that have constant water out in front of the box. Second, find a good single tree that has the prevailing wind direction for the spring time. Normally its a south, south west wind that helps the hen wood duck on here decent into the box. The Third thing to do is make sure its 8 to 10 ft height and above the normal flood elevation for your area. The fourth thing to do is use good pine wood shaving and fill the box up about 6 to 10 inches, this is important because the use of saw dust will sucate the new born chicks, and potentially give the phenomuna if wet from rain and a cool front comes through. Lastly you need to have a good stable boat to use allowing for a platform big enough tohave a cooler on the front of the boat. We use our Gator Trax Hyper Drive 17 ft boat and our YETTI 35 cooler that is a great wood duck box boat. Hey get those boxes out now and check the old ones that you put out years ago.
